Waterford FC Striker Tommy Lonergan scored his first goal for Ireland’s Under 21 side when he headed home after just two minutes in their European championship Group D clash with Slovakia in Kosice.

Sean Grehan (Doncaster Rovers) added a second  just before the hour mark to secure the Irish all three points and keeps their hopes of at least making the playoffs alive.

Former Waterford player Romeo Akachukwu, who now plays at Southampton was introduced as a late substitute in the game.

The Irish return to action next Tuesday when they face Kazakhstan at Turner’s Cross and complete the window at the same venue against group leaders England on Tuesday October 6th.
