Jordan Henderson’s World Cup journey is set to come to an end as he needs surgery on a freak wrist injury he suffered in England’s victory over Mexico.
After surviving the 11 minutes of stoppage time with 10 men to book a place in the quarter-finals, England were soaking up the celebrations with their fans when Henderson suffered the injury.
The former Liverpool skipper landed awkwardly on his wrist as he slipped while climbing over the advertising hoardings during the celebrations.

Henderson, who was played once at this World Cup, left the field on a stretcher and received oxygen, as he was taken to hospital in Mexico City and did not travel back to England’s training base with the rest of Thomas Tuchel’s squad.
‘I’m sad because Jordan [Henderson] injured his wrist,’ England manager Tuchel told reporters post-match. ‘It’s quite serious. He’s in hospital. It doesn’t fit with the rest of the evening. I don’t know the procedure.’
England midfielder Jude Bellingham, who scored twice against Mexico, added: ‘He (Henderson) is in a bit of bother, but our medical team has everything under control. I’m not best to give too much detail as I do not know much about what is going on, but everyone was there to support him.’

Thomas Tuchel lost Tino Livramento to injury before the tournament began and has been without Reece James for the Three Lions’ last two outings. Meanwhile, Jarrell Quansah’s second-half red card against Mexico means Tuchel will be even shorter at the back.
England take on Norway in the quarter-finals on Saturday night after their win at the Azteca in the early hours of Monday morning, with Henderson’s injury being yet another dilemma for Tuchel.
