Chelsea and England star Cole Palmer has opened up about his shock omission from Thomas Tuchel’s World Cup squad.
Palmer featured regularly for England two summers ago at the European Championships, scoring against Spain in the final, and was prominent in the qualifying campaign for this World Cup, even starting England’s last friendly against Japan before the squad was announced.
However, a disappointing season for his club ultimately cost the 24-year-old a place in the squad, making him one of several high-profile omissions.

‘I’m watching it [the World Cup] where I can.’ Cole Palmer said, speaking to The Times. ‘I’m enjoying my holidays and doing different things, but when I’m chilling, then yeah, if a game is on, I’ll watch it.
‘Of course I do [wish I were part of the squad]. Every player who plays football wants to be at the World Cup, but it’s a decision that I cannot change and a hard one, for whatever reason.’
Thomas Tuchel may be regretting not selecting Palmer, especially given the England team’s lack of creativity so far in the tournament.

Jamie Carragher added his name to the list of pundits who suggested Tuchel made a costly error by refusing to take a gamble on Palmer.
Asked if he agreed with those sentiments, Palmer added: ‘Yeah, of course it’s nice, but I’m not there. I know what I could have offered, you know — something different from what the manager has picked. But as I said before, I can’t change the decision, and I wish everyone all the best.’
Palmer will surely be watching on when England face off against Mexico in the Round of 16 at the Azteca Stadium on Sunday night, and Thomas Tuchel’s side will need to be much better if they are to get a result in the fortress that is the Azteca.
