Dunmore Badminton Club will host a 12-hour non-stop badminton fundraiser tomorrow, Saturday, October 17th, in aid of Breast Cancer Ireland.
The Smash Cancer event will run from 9 am to 9 pm at St Thomas’s Church on the Dunmore Road in Waterford, with members of the public invited to take to the court or support the fundraiser through donations.
Entry costs €10 per person, with games starting every 30 minutes throughout the day.
Speaking on Sport Láirge on WLR, Dunmore Badminton Club committee member Lorraine Brennan said the idea came about during Breast Cancer Awareness Month, with the club keen to use sport to support an important cause.
Brennan said breast cancer affects families and communities across the country, with the fundraiser offering an opportunity for the local badminton community to come together.
The event has received support from badminton clubs across Waterford, including Tramore, Waterford, Kilmac, Lismore and Tourin.
Alongside the badminton, there will be refreshments and a raffle featuring prizes donated by local businesses.
Organisers are also encouraging people who cannot attend to contribute through the event’s online fundraising page. The club had set a target of €1,500 and was approaching that figure ahead of the event.
Those interested in taking part can contact Dunmore Badminton Club by emailing dunmorebc1953@gmail.com. Further details, including information on donations and the raffle, are available through the club’s social media pages.
The fundraiser takes place during Breast Cancer Awareness Month, with organisers hoping to raise money and awareness while bringing the community together through sport.
