Waterford FC 1 Galway United 1
Waterford FC’s quest for their first win of the season continues after a late goal saw them share the spoils with Galway United at the RSC and give themselves a lifeline in the SSE Airtricity Men’s Premier Division.
Once again, Jon Daly made a raft of changes as he looked for a formula that would unlock that first victory with Jordan Houston, Cian Barrett, Conor Carty, Hayden Cann and Sam Glenfield coming into the starting eleven while Conan Noonan had recovered enough to take his place on the bench.
From the opening whistle, it was the visitors who dominated as they forced a host of corners and pressed Waterford back towards their own goal. Arlo Doherty made an early save to settle the nerves. However, it was the Tribesmen who kept their attack going and with their ninth corner of the half, they got the breakthrough. David Hurley floated a ball to the back post where Killian Brouder rose to head home, two minutes before the break.
Jon Daly made a couple of changes for the second half with Dean McMenamy and Evan McLaughlin coming in and they made an immediate impact. The Blues were more positive and it was a McMenamy free kick on the hour mark that produced a good save from Evan Watts. Three more changes saw Tommy Lonergan, Conan Noonan and Trae Coyle enter the fray and as the Blues pushed forward looking for a way back into the game, they forced a number of corners which were dealt with by the Tribesmen. As the game moved into injury time , it looked as if Waterford were heading for another defeat but McLaughlin and McMenamy combined to deliver a vital goal with the last kick of the game. A corner into a crowded goalmouth from the Derry man saw a scramble ensue and it was Waterford’s longest serving player who got the vital touch to give the Blues a Premier Division lifeline.
