Waterford’s Joe Tracy was a pioneering figure in American motorsport with his use of the Locomobile ‘Old 16.’

This was a fixture of races such as the Vanderbilt Cup and American Elimination Races of the early 20th century.

In 1906, the Irish driver promised to marry a Miss Taylor if he won the Elimination Race.

The Pittsburgh Press later carried the headline: ‘SWEETHEART FAINTED AS HER FEARLESS LOVER SAFELY PILOTED LOCOMOBILE ACROSS FINISH LINE.’

However, Tracy appeared to be as madcap in love as he was in motor racing…
