Doctors across Waterford have been warned by UHW authorities about a "staffing crisis" at the Dept of Dermatology in UHW - with potential significant impact on patients.

A Consultant Dermatologist is understood to be leaving UHW in the coming weeks, leaving just two dermatologists (one of them currently on reduced hours).

It's understood there should be at least 5 dermatologists to facilitate the referrals from the region and meet the clinical need.

The letter, sent to GPs in the Southeast catchment area, highlights how the situation will result in referalls being prioritised on clinical urgency and risk.

It does, however, warn of "clear barriers" in place due to the "significant shortage of staffing" - and is asking GPs to consider "alternative referral routes" for appropriate patients.

'Deise Today' this morning (Tuesday) spoke to Tramore-based GP Dr Austin Byrne to get his take on the situation.
