A primary school in County Waterford is to close at the end of the school year due to falling enrolments.
Knockmahon National School in Bunmahon will shut its doors on June 19th, 2026.
The Diocese of Waterford and Lismore, which is Patron of the school, says enrolment has declined significantly over a sustained period, leaving the school no longer viable.
It says the decision follows consultation with the Board of Management and engagement with the Department of Education.
In response, the Department says the decision-making authority for a school closure rests with the Patron of a school, but any proposal must involve consultation with parents, teachers, students and the wider community.
It says proposals must also be agreed with the Department, which assesses the wider impact on nearby schools, school place availability and future capital investment.
The Bishop of Waterford and Lismore says the decision has not been taken lightly and acknowledges the school’s long role in the local community.
He thanks staff, parents and volunteers for their commitment over the years and says support will be provided to pupils and families during the transition.
In November, a public meeting called “Keep our School” was held, organised by Comeragh District Councillor Catherine Burke in an effort to save the school from closure.
