Staff from WLR and the broadcast centre joined people across Waterford this morning in a walkout highlighting violence against women.

Staff from WLR and the broadcast centre stepped outside at 11am as part of the Walk Out for Women campaign.

People were being asked to leave their homes, workplaces, schools or colleges for 15 minutes from 11am and wear red in support.

Organisers say the walkout is intended to remember women who have been killed and to encourage wider discussion around domestic abuse, sexual violence and gender-based violence.

Monica Murphy, one of the organisers, previously said the event was designed to be both a moment of reflection and a call for further action.

‘Violence against women affects every community, and Waterford is no exception,’ she said.

The campaign is also calling for greater focus on prevention, education around respect for women and stronger support for victims going through the court system.

Today’s walkout formed part of efforts to keep conversations around violence against women visible across communities in the country.
