Progress is continuing on ambitious Waterford visitor attraction plans, with new updates confirming that key decisions on the project are still under assessment.

The proposed development, described as a potential “visitor attraction of scale”, was first announced by Fáilte Ireland last year as part of efforts to boost tourism in Waterford and the wider south east region.

Strategic reports to determine next steps

Waterford City and County Council is currently working with Fáilte Ireland on a detailed evaluation process to shape the future of the project.

Chief Executive Seán McKeown confirmed that two major reports are central to progressing the Waterford visitor attraction plans.

“There are two reports Fáilte Ireland are concerned with one is where exactly an attraction of scale should be located, and the second is what form that attraction should take,” he said.

The first report will assess the most suitable location on the north side of the River Suir, using a range of technical criteria.

Debate over type of attraction

The second report will explore the concept and design of the proposed development.

According to McKeown, there are different approaches under consideration.

“Should it be something iconic like an Eiffel Tower-style structure, or something that people can actively engage with and enter?” he explained.

The outcome of this report is expected to play a major role in defining the final vision for the Waterford visitor attraction plans.

Potential for major tourism impact

Fáilte Ireland has previously indicated that the project could be transformative for tourism in the region, with the potential to significantly increase visitor numbers.

If delivered, the development would form part of wider regeneration efforts on the north quays and surrounding areas.

Next steps still unclear

While progress is being made behind the scenes, both reports have yet to be finalised or publicly released.

“There is a report on that that we haven’t seen yet,” McKeown added.

Until those findings are available, the timeline and final scope of the Waterford visitor attraction plans remain uncertain.
