Schools, residents’ associations and voluntary groups across Waterford are being invited to apply for free trees and hedging under a new council initiative.

Waterford City and County Council is launching its Community Tree programme on Thursday, October 1st, to coincide with National Tree Day.

The scheme will provide eligible non-profit and voluntary organisations with native trees, hedging and saplings for use in community spaces.

Groups can apply for up to six native trees or 150 hedging plants.

The council says the initiative is aimed at improving biodiversity, enhancing public spaces and creating greener local environments.

Ella Ryan, Environmental Awareness Officer with Waterford City and County Council, said trees can provide important habitats and food sources for birds, insects and other wildlife.

She added that planting can also help protect soil, intercept rainfall and reduce surface water run-off.

Applications are now open through the Waterford Community Trees Initiative 2026 online application form.

The closing date is Tuesday, October 20th.
