Waterford City and County Council is urging people to exercise caution as Storm Austen approaches, with crews preparing for flooding and difficult travelling conditions overnight.
A Status Orange rain warning for Waterford will come into effect at 10pm today (Thursday) and remain in place until 5am on Friday.
A nationwide Status Yellow rain and wind warning is also in place from 7pm on Thursday until 10am on Friday.

The council says Storm Austen is expected to bring intense rainfall and strong easterly winds, with gusts potentially exceeding 100 kilometres per hour.
Localised flooding is possible in low-lying areas, smaller watercourses and areas affected by surface water, while fallen trees, branches and debris could make travelling conditions very difficult.
Following a meeting of the council’s Severe Weather Assessment Team, crews have been clearing fallen leaves and debris from flood-prone areas and drainage gullies.
Crews will remain on call overnight, while Waterford Fire Service and Swift Water Response Teams are also prepared to mobilise if required.
Sandbags will be available if needed at council depots in Dungarvan, Carrickphierish, Tramore, Leperstown in Dunmore East and Tallow, as well as at Clashmore GAA Centre and Siopa Nua in Passage East.
Motorists are being advised to avoid unnecessary journeys where possible, reduce speed and never attempt to drive through flooded roads.
The council is also warning people not to park overnight in flood-prone areas including Davitt’s Quay, The Pond, The Lookout and Castle Street Car Park in Dungarvan.
Members of the public are being advised to secure loose outdoor items and stay away from coastal areas during the storm.
