A Waterford-based carer has been named a regional winner at the Comfort Keepers Carer of the Year Awards 2026.
Alan Nugent received the award for his dedication, consistent high standards in care, and good humour. He was recognised at a ceremony in Croke Park, where he was one of 18 finalists from across the country.
Nugent, who lives with his fiancée Becca and two daughters, Esme, 14, and Nora, 4, changed career in early 2026 to move into caring. His youngest daughter tells people his job is “tucking granddads into bed and making them feel better.”
He says receiving the award is a humbling moment and says working in homecare has opened his heart in unexpected ways. He adds that while his name is on the award, it belongs to the people he supports every day.
Comfort Keepers says the awards recognise carers who help people live independently at home with dignity and connection. The company has been operating for more than 20 years and provides homecare services across Waterford, Wexford and Wicklow.
Comfort Keepers CEO Collette Gleeson says Alan’s passion reflects the difference compassionate care can make, adding that carers help people maintain independence and community connection.
The company has also been named Business All-Star All-Ireland Champion Home Care Company 2026 for the third consecutive year.
Former Kerry footballer Pat Spillane, an ambassador for the organisation, says carers are the backbone of communities and deserve recognition for their work supporting vulnerable people.
Comfort Keepers is also supporting the FTD Brothers in their 32 marathons in 32 days challenge, raising funds for dementia-related charities and aiming to highlight the impact of neurological conditions on families.
