The importance of regional and international collaboration in tackling climate change was highlighted at a conference hosted by the Southern Regional Assembly in Waterford.
The event, titled Climate Transition Towards 2050, brought together elected members, local authority staff, regional stakeholders, business representatives and climate experts to discuss practical approaches to climate action and sustainable economic growth across the Southern Region.
The conference also formed part of ongoing engagement between Waterford and Denmark through county-country pairings established under Ireland’s EU Presidency programme.
The partnership provides an opportunity for Waterford and Danish partners to share expertise and experience in areas including climate action, renewable energy and sustainable development.
The international nature of the event was reflected in the attendance of Kyle O’Sullivan, Ambassador of Ireland to Denmark, and Ole Egberg Mikkelsen, Chargé d’Affaires of the Kingdom of Denmark.
Participants heard about Waterford’s experience in pursuing carbon neutrality, alongside Denmark’s approach to renewable energy development and community engagement.
Discussions focused on the role of local leadership, regional cooperation and public participation in supporting the transition to a low-carbon future.
Contributors included Gráinne Kennedy, Climate Action Coordinator with Waterford City and County Council, and Associate Professor Kristian Borch of Aalborg University.
A panel discussion, titled Local Leadership, Learning and Collaboration, also took place during the conference.
Speaking at the event, Cllr Thomas Phelan, Member of the Southern Regional Assembly, said collaboration at local, regional and international level will be important in addressing climate change.
He said working across local authorities, businesses, communities and educational institutions can help position the Southern Region to meet future challenges while creating opportunities for sustainable growth and innovation.
The conference forms part of ongoing work by the Southern Regional Assembly and its partners to support climate action, sustainable development and regional cooperation across the Southern Region.
