Housing delivery, healthcare services and infrastructure were among the issues discussed when Waterford Cathaoirleach Liam Brazil met with Tánaiste Simon Harris and senior Government ministers at Government Buildings on Wednesday.
The meeting formed part of a wider engagement between the Tánaiste and 13 Fine Gael councillors who have recently taken up the role of first citizen in their respective counties.
Councillor Brazil, who was elected Cathaoirleach of Waterford City and County Council in June, said he used the meeting to outline a number of priorities for his term in office.
Among the issues raised were the need for increased housing delivery, particularly in rural areas, improved mental health supports, expanded cardiac services at University Hospital Waterford, investment in wastewater infrastructure and additional funding for local roads.
“My priorities are clear, build more houses to repopulate our rural villages and keep local shops, schools and GAA clubs alive,” Councillor Brazil said.
He also highlighted the importance of addressing mental health challenges and reducing the stigma associated with suicide, while continuing the campaign for a 24/7 Cath Lab service at Waterford Regional Hospital to serve the South East.
Councillor Brazil said delays in wastewater infrastructure were affecting housing delivery and called for a more progressive approach from Irish Water. He also said local roads funding should increase in line with inflation.
The meeting did not result in any specific funding announcements, but Tánaiste Simon Harris said he would continue to engage with Councillor Brazil on issues affecting Waterford.
“I want to thank Liam for meeting me in Government Buildings and for the energy he is bringing to his new role,” Mr Harris said.
“Where we can help deliver for the people of Waterford, whether that is housing, healthcare or investment across the city and county, my door is open and I will be in regular contact with Liam to see what more we can do for Waterford.”
The issues raised at the meeting reflect several long-running challenges for Waterford, including the need for increased housing supply, improved infrastructure capacity and continued investment in health services across the South East.
Councillor Brazil said he intends to use his term as Cathaoirleach to advocate for these priorities at both local and national level.
