Motorcycle safety advice

With more motorcycles and mopeds expected on the roads during the summer months, Gardaí in Waterford are reminding owners to take steps to protect their vehicles from theft.

Motorcyclists in Waterford are advised to always lock the ignition, remove the key and use high quality locks, chains or cables. Where possible, bikes should be secured to a solid, immovable object and parked in secure locations such as garages or enclosed yards when at home.

When parking away from home, riders are encouraged to choose busy, well lit areas and avoid leaving motorcycles hidden between larger vehicles. The use of alarms, immobilisers, tracking devices and ground anchors can also help deter thieves and improve the chances of recovering stolen vehicles.

Owners should avoid leaving valuables or vehicle documents in storage compartments and consider using a plain motorcycle cover to reduce attention. Gardaí also recommend photographing motorcycles and recording identifying marks to help prove ownership if a bike is stolen.

Anyone selling a motorcycle privately is advised to verify the identity of buyers, confirm payment has cleared before handing over the bike or ownership documents and remain cautious throughout the sale process.

Gardaí in Waterford continue to encourage anyone who witnesses suspicious activity or has information about any crime to contact their local Garda station, call 999 or 112 in an emergency, or use the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111.
