Waterford is preparing for an unforgettable weekend as the WLR Waterford Viking Marathon 2026 officially becomes the largest running event ever staged in the city and county, with record-breaking participation expected across the marathon, half marathon, 10k, relay events, and family races.
What began as just a marathon has evolved into one of Ireland’s most exciting running festivals, transforming the streets of Waterford into a sea of colour, music, cheers, and Viking pride while celebrating fitness, community spirit, and inclusivity for all.
Participants from across Ireland and more than 30 countries worldwide will travel to Ireland’s oldest city this June, bringing an electric festival atmosphere that extends far beyond race day. From the beating drums and Viking costumes to packed streets lined with supporters, live entertainment, and buzzing cafés and restaurants, the entire city will come alive for a weekend unlike any other.
Event and Communications Lead, Fiona Craughan say the event’s remarkable growth reflects Waterford’s unique ability to combine world-class events with a truly welcoming experience for runners, walkers, families, and supporters of every age and ability.
“This event is about far more than medals and finish lines,” Fiona said. “It is about community, inclusivity, atmosphere, and showcasing everything that makes Waterford special. Whether you are chasing a personal best, walking your first 10k, taking part in the Waterford Viking Run for All, or cheering from the sidelines with family, there is a place for everyone at the Waterford Viking Marathon.”

The route itself has become one of the event’s biggest attractions, offering participants breathtaking scenery throughout Waterford city and county. Runners will experience the beauty of the River Suir, the historic Viking Triangle, picturesque Mount Congreve Gardens, the famous Waterford Greenway, and the incredible support of local communities who line the course from start to finish.
Families are also at the heart of the festival, with the weekend kicking off on Saturday June 20th with children’s races at the RSC, before the main race events take place on Sunday June 21st alongside live music, entertainment zones, and activities designed to ensure there is something for everyone, not just runners.
The hugely popular Waterford Viking Run for All continues to grow each year. Originally launched in 2024 as the Autism Friendly Run, it has become a standout symbol of the event’s commitment to accessibility and inclusion, welcoming participants from a wide range of abilities to experience the excitement and pride of crossing the finish line in the heart of the city.
The event also proudly welcomes back the RNLI as official charity partner for a second consecutive year. Funds raised throughout race weekend will support the three RNLI lifeboat stations across Waterford, Tramore, Dunmore East, and Helvick Head, helping volunteers continue their lifesaving work along the county’s coastline.
With accommodation bookings already surging and thousands expected to visit the region over race weekend, the economic and tourism impact for Waterford is expected to be significant.
As the countdown continues to race weekend, with limited availability remaining across all events, one thing is certain, the WLR Waterford Viking Marathon 2026 is no longer just a race. It is a festival. A celebration. And a moment that will place Waterford firmly on the map as one of Ireland’s great running destinations.
The event was also recently featured in Canadian running magazine IMPACT as a marathon worth travelling for.
