Waterford street arts company Spraoi is preparing to bring its giant wolves and world-famous spectacle to Wales for the first time as part of celebrations marking the 850th anniversary of the first ever Eisteddfod.
The multi-arts celebration takes place in Cardigan on Saturday, June 27th, commemorating the original Eisteddfod held at Cardigan Castle in 1176 by Lord Rhys. Today, the Eisteddfod is regarded as Wales’s premier festival of literature, music and performance, celebrating Welsh language and culture.
Spraoi will join a spectacular procession through the streets of Cardigan featuring a giant puppet of Lord Rhys, created by Welsh performance company Small World Theatre. The parade forms part of a week-long programme of cultural and community events across West Wales, directed by renowned artist Marc Rees.
The Waterford company will perform with a family of giant wolves escorting Lord Rhys from his boat as he makes his ceremonial journey to Cardigan Castle.
The performance marks Spraoi’s first-ever street spectacle appearance in Wales and represents a major international milestone for the company.
Spraoi Director T.V. Honan says the company is honoured to be involved in such a historic cultural event.
“This is a tremendous privilege for Spraoi to perform as part of the Eisteddfod’s 850th anniversary programme. Our team of artists and technicians are excited to entertain audiences in Wales and to collaborate with cultural colleagues across the Irish Sea. Huge thanks to our funders for creating this international opportunity for us.”
Spraoi’s Welsh premiere is supported by Culture Ireland, Wales Arts International and the Eisteddfod.
