An Essex-based cyclist is preparing to travel more than 2,200 miles around Ireland as part of a fundraising challenge celebrating Irish culture, heritage and historic links between Ireland and Essex.

Aidan Spence’s challenge, titled Aidan Cycles for Cedd, will begin in Rosslare on June 26th before taking him through the South East, including Wexford and Waterford.

He aims to raise £2,200, with £1 pledged for every mile cycled, in support of Irish cultural organisations in Essex. Beneficiaries include St Cedd’s GAA, St Cedd’s Céilí Band, Cúpla Focal na nGael Chelmsford and Chelmsford Irish.

The first phase of the route will also take him through Cork, Kerry, Clare and Limerick, where he plans to meet local communities, visit heritage sites and engage with traditional music and language groups.

The ride takes its name from St Cedd, Essex’s Irish-speaking patron saint, who was educated in the Irish monastic tradition linked to Colmcille and Iona and founded a monastery in Bradwell-on-Sea in 654 AD.

There is also a historical connection to St Aidan of Lindisfarne, with organisers highlighting the links between early Irish missionary traditions and the naming of the challenge.

Speaking ahead of the journey, Aidan Spence said the cycle is about celebrating shared heritage and highlighting long-standing connections between Ireland and Essex.

The challenge will be documented on social media throughout the summer, where supporters can follow his progress across the island.

Funds raised will go towards supporting Irish cultural, sporting and language activity across Chelmsford and mid-Essex.
