Mourners at the funeral of Jamey Carney have heard that she was ‘kind person’ and the ‘sunshine’ of her family.

Ms Carney, a mother of one, was killed in her home in Killarney, Co Kerry on July 7. Ms Carney, originally from the USA, had been living in Ireland for five years, having moved here from her native New York.

A man in his 40s, believed to be Ms Carney’s boyfriend, has been detained in his native Jordan after Gardaí named him as a significant person of interest surrounding her death.

Speaking at her funeral this afternoon, Fr Kieran O’Brien said that sadness has fallen on the town.

‘Surely we would think that our home place, which is our sanctuary, that we ought to feel safe in our homes. We won’t dwell on Jamey’s death, but we dwell on her life.’

Fr O’Brien said 43-year-old Jamey was her family’s ‘sunshine’.

‘She was bright, she was cheerful, described as such a kind person.’

‘The sunflower was her flower; a flower that grows to be tall, colourful, bright and beautiful. She was happy in life, and she was happy with life because life was good to her.’

Addressing Jamey’s daughter, Fr O’Brien said that she was her mother’s real love in life — with the community of Killarney rallying around her following her mother’s tragic death.

‘At a time like this, the close community of Killarney rally around you, acknowledging the support that you have received from friends, neighbours, visitors on holidays, and even people you don’t know.’

‘Our greatest hope at this time is that Jamey is at peace; that God will prepare a home for her now in heaven.’

It is believed that the person of interest in Ms Carney’s murder fled Kerry to Dublin Airport, where he then boarded a last-minute flight to Turkey before crossing over to Jordan.

He has since been arrested in Jordan, but Extra.ie understands that there may be legal battles surrounding a potential extradition to Ireland — which may take upwards of several months.
