The first cohorts of students have begun their studies in Veterinary Medicine, Pharmacy and Home Economics at South East Technological University.
The three new programmes are being introduced by SETU in the South East for the first time, providing new pathways for students looking to pursue careers in the professions.
Around 40 students have commenced the five-year Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine.
The course combines scientific study with clinical training and practical experience, with students studying at SETU and also having access to teaching and specialist facilities at Teagasc Kildalton College.
The first intake of the five-year Master of Pharmacy programme has also welcomed close to 40 students.
The course combines academic and professional learning, with opportunities for students to engage with the region’s healthcare sector.
Almost 40 students have also taken up places on the new three-year BA Honours degree in Home Economics.
The programme combines practical and creative learning with professional skills, preparing graduates for a range of careers and settings.
Dr Mary-Kate Burke, Head of the Department of Veterinary Medicine, says the arrival of the first students is a significant milestone for SETU and the South East.
She says the Veterinary Medicine programme has been designed around practical learning, giving students the clinical skills and real-world experience needed for a career in veterinary medicine.
Dr Claire Lennon, Head of the Department of Pharmacy, says the university is ambitious for the new Master of Pharmacy programme and the impact it can have in the region.
She says students will be treated as partners as the new programme develops.
Dr Aileen Murphy, Programme Director of the BA Honours in Home Economics, says the course will allow students to develop practical, creative and professional skills.
She says SETU is proud to be starting a new chapter with its first Home Economics students.
The three programmes represent a significant expansion of SETU’s academic offering and bring new professional education opportunities to students in the South East.
