The death has taken place of Sean Dower, whose commitment to public life, sport, culture and community organisations which spanned decades, is being remembered as a man whose contribution to Waterford reached far beyond politics.
He served as a Fianna Fáil councillor from 1999 to 2004 and later held the position of chairman of the party in Waterford for a number of years. More recently, he was recognised by Taoiseach Micheál Martin with an award acknowledging his longstanding service to the party in Dungarvan.
Outside politics, Sean was deeply involved in many aspects of Waterford life.
A lifelong member and committee member of Mount Sion GAA Club, he was described by those who knew him as “one of the greatest Mount Sion men never to play on the field” a reflection of his unwavering commitment to the club and the countless hours he devoted behind the scenes. He was also a passionate supporter of Waterford hurling and Manchester United.
His dedication to the arts was equally significant. Sean was a valued volunteer with Spraoi for many years and is father to Jamie Dower who serves as chairperson of the festival.
He was also a prominent figure in Waterford’s Light Opera Festival and served for several years on the Board of Management of the Mercy schools. Most recently, he helped organise the civic reception in City Hall to mark the departure of the Mercy Sisters from Waterford after generations of service.
Across politics, sport, education and the arts, Sean became known as someone who was always willing to lend a hand, quietly working behind the scenes to support organisations and people across the city and county.
Tributes are expected from across Waterford in the coming days as friends and colleagues remember a man whose legacy will be measured not just by the positions he held, but by the countless lives and organisations he touched through decades of dedicated service.
As a mark of respect following his passing, Spraoi has postponed the launch of its 2026 festival programme, with a revised event expected to take place next week.
