€70,000 has been announced for river blockage removal works aimed at reducing flood risks in parts of Waterford.

The funding will allow Waterford City and County Council to clear high-risk river blockage points along waterways where restricted flow has been identified as a threat to nearby homes and properties.

Works are expected to focus on locations including the River Glenaboy in Tallow, as well as river crossings, bridges and culverts where blockages can increase the risk of flooding during heavy rainfall.

The announcement comes alongside a major expansion of the Office of Public Works’ Minor Flood Mitigation Works and Coastal Protection Scheme.

River blockage scheme:

Under the updated scheme, the maximum funding available for projects is increasing from €750,000 to €2 million, while the OPW contribution for larger approved projects will rise from 90 per cent to 95 per cent.

Changes to the criteria will also make it easier for local authorities to access funding for flood relief and coastal protection measures.

The Government says the revised scheme is designed to help councils deliver faster interim flood protection measures while larger long-term flood defence projects continue through planning and construction phases.

Additional flexibility has also been introduced to support emergency responses to coastal erosion and severe weather damage following recent storms.
