A Waterford boy has come up with the winning name for a rare baby rhino born at Fota Wildlife Park.
The male Indian rhinoceros calf has been named Bodhi following a public competition.
The name, which is of Sanskrit origin and means ‘awakening’ or ‘enlightenment’, was suggested by AJ Carroll from Dunmore East, Waterford.
His entry was selected from hundreds of suggestions, with his family winning an annual pass to Fota Wildlife Park.
Bodhi was born on July 13th to mother Maya and father Jamil and is only the second Indian rhinoceros ever born in Ireland.
The species, also known as the greater one-horned rhinoceros, is classified as Vulnerable by the International Union for Conservation of Nature.
Around 4,000 are estimated to remain in the wild.
Bodhi’s arrival was one of a number of conservation breeding successes at Fota Wildlife Park over the summer, alongside the birth of giraffe, lion, tiger and bison calves.
