Sinn Féin TDs David Cullinane and Conor D. McGuinness say the Government must match its recognition of the Port of Waterford with investment to support its future growth.
The party has welcomed the continued designation of the Port of Waterford as a Port of National Significance in the Government’s draft revised National Ports Policy.
Deputy David Cullinane says the port is one of the country’s most strategically important commercial ports and a key economic asset for Waterford and the South East.
He says the Government must now follow through with investment in transport links, future expansion and other infrastructure to allow the port to continue growing and competing nationally.
Deputy Cullinane also says it’s disappointing the draft policy makes no meaningful reference to Dunmore East Harbour, adding Sinn Féin will raise the issue during the consultation process.
Deputy Conor D. McGuinness says the policy recognises the growing role ports will play in trade, offshore renewable energy and the wider maritime economy.
He believes the Port of Waterford is well positioned to play a greater role in each of those areas and says investment is needed to ensure the region benefits through jobs, economic growth and improved infrastructure.
Deputy McGuinness says that should include upgrades to the N24, N25 and rail links serving the South East.
The two TDs say they will take part in the consultation process and will seek an early meeting with the Port of Waterford Company to discuss the investment needed to strengthen the port’s strategic role.
