A gorse fire near Mount Melleray Hill in West Waterford, which was visible across a wide area overnight, has been brought under control.

The Mount Melleray gorse fire is understood to have broken out on higher ground behind the Abbey, in a remote area near Mount Melleray, allowing flames to be seen for miles across the region.

Emergency response overnight

Fire crews from Lismore and Cappoquin attended the scene, with the blaze reportedly extinguished at approximately 5am.

The location of the fire meant there were no immediate threats to nearby homes, as the affected area is situated away from residential dwellings.

Fire visible across large parts of West Waterford

Due to its elevated position, the Mount Melleray gorse fire was highly visible across West Waterford overnight, prompting concern among residents in surrounding areas.

Observers noted that while the fire was some distance from populated areas, its scale and location made it particularly noticeable.
