A man has been arrested following an alleged public order incident in Waterford City yesterday afternoon.

Gardaí responded to an incident on Broad Street at approximately 4.40pm on Friday, September 11th.

A man was subsequently arrested and Gardaí say a suspected imitation firearm was recovered.

The man, aged in his 40s, is currently being detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984 at a Garda station in County Waterford.

Footage appearing to show part of the incident circulated widely on social media following the incident on Friday afternoon.

In a statement to WLR News, a Garda spokesperson said:

‘Gardaí responded to an alleged public order incident that occurred at Broad Street, Waterford on Friday 11th September 2026 at approximately 4:40pm.

‘Gardaí subsequently arrested a male and recovered a suspected imitation firearm.’

Gardaí confirmed that the man remains in custody.

Investigations are ongoing.
