More than €33,000 has been allocated to community literacy projects in Waterford and Wexford as part of a national funding programme aimed at improving literacy, numeracy, digital skills and financial literacy.
The funding of €33,494 has been awarded through the Adult Literacy for Life Collaboration and Innovation Fund 2026, administered by SOLAS.
Among the projects receiving support is a numeracy initiative at Kilrossanty GAA Club. The “Ag Bogadh Ag Comhaireamh” project will install numeracy challenges along the club’s 1.2-kilometre walking track, allowing adults to build confidence with maths skills while exercising.
Another project will provide digital literacy workshops for members of the Roma community, helping participants learn how to access and use the HSE app and other online health services.
Funding has also been allocated to the “Money Matters” initiative, which will support users of Reach Ability day services to develop financial literacy skills, manage their finances safely and reduce the risk of financial abuse.
The funding announcement was made by Minister for Further and Higher Education James Lawless and Minister of State Marian Harkin at an Adult Literacy for Life showcase event in Portlaoise.
Minister Harkin said the projects are helping people access essential literacy services and contributing to a more inclusive society.
Regional Literacy Coordinator with Waterford and Wexford ETB, Edel Finan, said seven projects in the region have received funding this year and will help adults build confidence in everyday skills and participate more fully in work, learning and community life.
The Waterford and Wexford allocation forms part of a €1 million national fund supporting literacy projects across the country.
