After 47 days, Waterford climber Adam Sweeney has made history by becoming the youngest Irish person ever to summit Mount Everest.

The 22-year-old from Dunmore East reached the top of the world overnight alongside teammates Padraig O’Hora and Éanna McGowan, as part of Team Ireland.

The group successfully reached the summit with their Sherpas Pemba, Milan and Sona after a difficult few days on the mountain, with the expedition led by leader and mountaineer Jason Black.

Adam is now officially the first person from Waterford to summit Everest and the youngest Irish climber ever to achieve the feat.

The climb also marks a major milestone for Irish mountaineering, with the trio becoming the first Irish team to summit Everest since the Ireland-on-Everest expedition in 2019.

this week, the climbers were forced to turn back during an earlier summit push because of dangerous conditions, deep snow and freezing temperatures high on the mountain.

Messages of congratulations and support have been pouring in for Adam and the team following confirmation of the successful summit.

Team Ireland is now making its way safely back down to Camp 4 following the climb.
