The upcoming radio series Gaeilge sa Ghalltacht a Dó brings together the personal stories of ten distinguished individuals whose lives have been shaped by the Irish language. Speaking with writer Catherine Foley, each guest reflects on childhood, family, work and the lifelong influence of being an Irish speaker.

Conducted entirely through Irish, the series explores memorable moments, life-changing experiences and the people who inspired each contributor’s love of the language. Through their stories, listeners gain an insight into the richness of Irish language and culture both within and beyond the Gaeltacht.

The new series follows the success of Muintir na nDéise 1, 2 and 3, which received the News & Star Green Room Award for Best Radio Series in 2022 and earned nominations at the IMRO Radio Awards and Gradam Cumarsáide an Oireachtais. Produced by RoseAnn Foley and Catherine Foley of An Corsaiceach, most interviews were conducted in Baile na nGall, An Rinn.

Among the contributors are Siobhán Uí Mhathúna, who recalls her childhood in An Rinn and how Ógras inspired her love of sport, and engineer Séamus Ó Riain, who shares memories of growing up in Waterford city. Former school principal Niall Ó Ceadagáin reflects on 43 years in education and his association with Coláiste na Rinne.

The series also features Máire Seó Breathnach, Caoimhín de Paor, Fiachra Ó Céilleachair, Prof Ciarán Ó Broin, Dr Stiofán Ó Cadhla, Olive Cróc and retired family doctor Dr Cathal Ó Dálaigh. Their stories span rural life in west Waterford, music, folklore, education and the experience of working and living through Irish.

Gaeilge sa Ghalltacht a Dó offers a heartfelt celebration of language, identity and the enduring connection between Irish and the people who speak it.
