Gardaí are continuing their investigation into a fatal assault in Dungarvan following the death of a man in his 70s in County Waterford.

Emergency services responded to an incident in the townland of Cappagh, near Dungarvan, shortly after 6pm on Monday evening.

Man pronounced dead at the scene

The man was discovered with serious injuries outside a residential property and was later pronounced dead at the scene.

His body has since been removed to the mortuary at University Hospital Waterford, where a post-mortem examination will take place.

Scene located along busy N72 route

The location of the incident has been identified along the N72, the busy route linking Dungarvan with Cappoquin and Lismore.

Reporter Kieran Foley said the scene is situated on the Dungarvan side of the Welcome Inn, a well-known local premises.

Man arrested as investigation continues

A man in his 40s was arrested at the scene and is currently being detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984 at a Garda station in the Eastern Region.

The scene, along with the nearby residence, has been preserved for a full forensic examination.

Garda investigation underway

Gardaí have confirmed that a Senior Investigating Officer has been appointed to lead the case, with an incident room established at Dungarvan Garda Station.

The Coroner and the Office of the State Pathologist have also been notified.

Investigations into the fatal assault in Dungarvan remain ongoing.
