Bishop of Waterford and Lismore Alphonsus Cullinan is encouraging people to come together in prayer following yesterday’s serious assault at Holy Cross Church in Tramore.

In a statement to WLR, Bishop Cullinan said: “I was deeply saddened to learn of the shocking attack that took place in Holy Cross Church, Tramore, while parishioners were gathered in prayer, reciting the Rosary before the celebration of Mass. We continue to pray in a particular way for the victim of this attack, who is a deeply faithful and devoted member of the parish community.”

He continued: “We ask everyone to remember her in their prayers and to pray also for her family and loved ones. Our thoughts are also with all those who witnessed this traumatic event. Such experiences can leave a lasting impact, and we assure them of our prayers and support.”

Bishop Cullinan extended his gratitude to Gardaí and all members of the emergency services who responded to the incident.

“I wish to commend the remarkable courage shown by the parishioners and clergy who immediately came to the assistance of the injured woman, placing themselves at risk in order to protect and care for her,” he said.

“Their bravery, compassion and presence of mind are a credit to the parish community. I also wish to express my sincere gratitude to An Garda Síochána and the emergency services for their prompt and professional response. We have every confidence that this matter will now be dealt with through the proper legal process.”

A man in his thirties has been charged in connection with the incident and is due to appear before Waterford District Court this morning.

Bishop Cullinan confirmed that this morning’s Mass in Holy Cross Church will go ahead at the usual time and will be concelebrated by Fr Richard, Parish Priest, together with Fr Isaac and Fr Tadeusz.

“I encourage everyone to come together in prayer for the victim, for all those affected by this traumatic event, and for the peace and healing of the entire community,” he said.

At moments like these, we are reminded that acts of violence can never overcome the strength of faith, hope and love. May the Lord bring healing to the injured, comfort to those who are distressed, and peace to the people of Tramore.”
