Waterford climber Adam Sweeney has returned to home soil in Dunmore East after becoming the youngest Irish person ever to summit Mount Everest.

The 22 year old reached the top of the world on May 20 as part of Team Ireland, alongside former Mayo intercounty footballer Pádraig O’Hora and Dublin climber Éanna McGowan.

The group completed a 47 day expedition on Mount Everest, under expedition leader Jason Black, reaching the summit in the early hours after a difficult final push on the mountain.

They were supported by Sherpas Pemba, Milan and Sona during the climb, which included setbacks on the mountain in the days leading up to their successful summit.

Sweeney, a member of Dunmore East RNLI, has also made history as the first person from Waterford to reach the summit.

The climb also marks the first Irish team ascent of Everest since 2019.

Sweeney has now returned home following the expedition, with celebrations expected in the coming days as his achievement is marked locally.

His mother Karen says he needs to rest for a few days, however a celebratory homecoming event is on the cards.
