The unique Cunnigar Crossing returns to Dungarvan on Sunday, August 16, offering walkers a rare chance to traverse the seabed from Dungarvan across the Brickey River to the Cunnigar and on towards Ballinacourty / An Rinn.
Also known as An Trasnú, the annual six-kilometre walk can only take place at low tide, with organisers carefully timing the event to ensure everyone is safely across before the water returns. The crossing typically takes around two hours, with experienced guides from the Dungarvan Hillwalking Club and Tipperary Mountaineering Club leading participants along a marked route that passes beside local oyster beds.
Registration opens at 1pm on the day at Dungarvan Sports Centre, with the walk starting at 2.30pm. The event is open to those aged 12 and over, with a €15 participation fee. Walkers can also register online via Inis Céilí GAA Club, Dungarvan Lions Club, and St Declan’s Way, with QR codes available on posters and social media.
Organiser Sheila Gahan describes the experience as “really unique”, with walkers often pausing mid-crossing to take in sweeping views back towards Dungarvan and Abbeyside. Participants are advised to wear old runners and clothes suitable for getting wet, as the first few hundred metres can involve walking in knee-high water.
Adding to the atmosphere, there will be traditional music from Dungarvan School of Music and Trad at the sports centre from 1pm, and further music at the far side in An Rinn, outside Tigh Uí Chatháin.
