Wicklow produced one of the most remarkable second-half comebacks seen at Croke Park to defeat Down 1-21 to 2-16 and lift the Tailteann Cup after an unforgettable final.

At half-time, it appeared Down were cruising towards the title. Goals from Pat Havern and Odhrán McGeough helped the Mourne County establish a commanding 2-10 to 0-04 advantage, while Wicklow struggled to find any rhythm and even saw Eoin Darcy have a penalty brilliantly saved by Ronan Burns.

Whatever was said in the Wicklow dressing room at the interval had an immediate effect. Padraig O’Toole, Eoin Darcy, Kevin Quinn and Oisin McGraynor all began to chip away at the deficit as Wicklow dominated possession and finally gained control around the middle of the field.

The turning point came in the 56th minute when Dean Healy produced a moment of magic. Collecting possession outside the Down defence, Healy burst past two defenders before rifling an unstoppable shot into the top corner to level the contest and ignite the Wicklow supporters.

Down briefly regained the lead, but Wicklow refused to be denied. A huge two-point free from goalkeeper Mark Jackson restored parity before Darcy edged the Garden County in front for the first time with five minutes remaining.

The closing stages were packed with drama. Wicklow survived a black card for Tom Moran, a superb goal-line save from Darragh Fee and a gilt-edged missed chance from Down before Kevin Quinn’s late point sealed a famous victory.

Dean Healy, who was named Player of the Match, lifted the Tailteann Cup alongside his young daughter before paying tribute to the supporters who inspired Wicklow’s incredible comeback.

“I wouldn’t say it’s been a journey that’s good for the heart, but Jesus, we don’t know when we’re beat,” said the Wicklow captain after the final whistle.

Reflecting on the dramatic turnaround, manager Padraig O’Toole pointed to a spell during the third quarter when Wicklow began to dominate Down’s kick-outs as the moment the momentum shifted decisively in their favour.

Having trailed by 12 points at the break, Wicklow outscored Down by 1-17 to 0-06 in a sensational second-half display to write one of the greatest chapters in the county’s football history and become Tailteann Cup champions.
