Here is what you need to know about the young out-half lighting up the province’s season.

A night to remember

The 20-year-old announced himself in style on Saturday night, steering Munster to their first win of the United Rugby Championship campaign.

His sensational display came in a 26-22 bonus-point victory over South African heavyweights the Bulls.

In just his first competitive start, O’Shea scored two tries, set up another with a clever crossfield kick and added three conversions.

It was a man-of-the-match performance that had Munster fans purring.

Cork through and through

O’Shea is a product of the Cork rugby nursery. He came up through the underage ranks at Dolphin RFC before starring for Christian Brothers College.

He helped his side to the Munster Schools Senior Cup in 2025, lifting the trophy at Virgin Media Park as his proud mother Hilary presented it to him.

He had also reached the final in the two previous years.

He went on to make his mark in senior club rugby with University College Cork, racking up 15 appearances in the All-Ireland League in his first season.

On the international stage, he was ever-present for the Ireland Under-20s, starting all five games as they won the Triple Crown this year. The campaign included a superb late penalty from the halfway line to beat England.

He also caught the eye at the Junior World Championship, scoring six tries along the way.

Munster breakthrough

Now in the first year of his Munster Academy contract, O’Shea has been thrust into the limelight by a shortage of senior out-halves at the province.

He made his debut off the bench against Glasgow, impressed on his first start in a pre-season meeting with Leicester Tigers, and then grabbed his competitive bow against the Bulls with both hands.

Head coach Clayton McMillan hailed the display as ‘phenomenal’, saying the youngster had ‘taken to it like a duck to water’.

Captain Craig Casey, his half-back partner, said after the game that he had simply told O’Shea to ‘play your game’ and find his voice, and was blown away by the response.

The reaction

On social media, the reaction has been one of total excitement, with the official URC X account announcing that ‘THIS KID IS SPECIAL’ before later stating that their ‘admin is out of words’.

The Irish Independent’s post-match report also announced that ‘a star’ had been born after O’Shea’s scintillating display.

With Munster crying out for a new leader at number 10, O’Shea looks every inch the real deal. Cork has certainly produced another one to watch.
