There is widespread sadness across Waterford hurling following the passing of Stephen Greene, one of the great servants of both Mount Sion and Waterford.

Greene, who passed away on May 1, 2026, at the age of 81, was a central figure during one of Mount Sion’s most successful periods. Known affectionately as “Greener,” he built a reputation as a versatile and committed player, lining out primarily in the forward line but also featuring in goal during his career.

His list of honours at club level is remarkable. Greene won ten senior county titles with Mount Sion and was part of the side that claimed Munster Club Championship glory in 1981, a landmark achievement in the club’s proud history.

At the inter-county level, he was a proud Waterford representative and had the distinction of captaining the Déise, further underlining his leadership qualities and standing within the game.

Away from the field, Greene was a well-known and respected member of the Waterford community. He served with the Waterford Fire Brigade, contributing greatly to public life in the city.

Stephen Greene will be remembered as one of Mount Sion’s greats, often spoken of alongside legendary figures such as Philly Grimes and Martin Óg Morrissey. His legacy in Waterford hurling is assured, and his contribution to club and county will not be forgotten.

He was also part of a proud hurling family, brother of Jim Greene and uncle to Brian Greene, both of whom also lined out with Waterford and Mount Sion.
