Waterford welcome London to Cappaquin Logistics Fraher Field on Sunday at 2 pm, with both sides knowing the importance of getting a positive result to kick-start their championship campaign. Preparations have been building steadily in recent weeks, with the squad putting in a strong block of training ahead of the opening round.

Speaking ahead of the game, Waterford footballer Dermot Ryan says the panel is in a good place mentally and physically, and is looking forward to a fixture they feel is very much winnable. He says there has been little to separate the sides in recent meetings, whether in Waterford or London.

Home advantage is expected to play a key role, with Waterford keen to make the most of familiar surroundings in Friaryfield. Ryan says avoiding travel disruption, sticking to routine, and having local support behind them can all make a difference at this level.

The last meeting between the sides in the league saw London’s inside forwards do significant damage, something Waterford are well aware of heading into Sunday. Ryan says limiting supply to their key attackers and tightening up defensively will be a major focus, along with competing strongly around midfield.

He also highlighted London’s strengths in kick-outs and their ability to win primary possession as key threats, adding that Waterford will need to be disciplined in their defensive match-ups and more efficient in scoring opportunities.

There is also optimism around the wider state of football in the county, with strong performances from underage sides, including the minors and under-20s. Ryan says the arrival of younger players into the senior panel has brought energy and competition, helping to raise standards within the squad.

Waterford will also be looking to carry forward their stronger form in championship-style football, with Ryan noting that performances in the Tailteann Cup in recent years have often been their most consistent. He believes familiarity within the panel and a settled squad structure can help them hit the ground running.

The winner will take a step forward in the Tailteann Cup campaign, with Waterford hoping to produce a performance that reflects their preparation and growing confidence.
