Waterford FC have reportedly turned down a record-breaking offer for striker Tommy Lonergan as interest in the in-form forward intensifies following the opening of the League of Ireland transfer window.
It is understood that Derry City submitted an initial bid for the Meath native which, if accepted, would have represented a record transfer fee received by Waterford for a player in the League of Ireland era.
The Blues are believed to have rejected the approach, underlining the importance of Lonergan to their plans for the remainder of the season.
The 24-year-old has emerged as one of the league’s standout performers in recent months and currently sits at the top of the Premier Division scoring charts.
Lonergan’s rich vein of form has seen him score seven goals since the beginning of May, playing a major role in Waterford’s recent upturn in fortunes and helping propel Keith Long’s side away from the relegation places.
His performances have not gone unnoticed elsewhere, with reports suggesting that Bohemians and Shamrock Rovers are also closely monitoring the striker’s situation.
While interest from rival clubs is expected to continue throughout the transfer window, Waterford are understood to view Lonergan as a key figure in their bid to retain Premier Division status.
The former Meath underage player has quickly become a favourite among the Waterford supporters, with his goals and work rate making him one of the most influential players in the Blues squad this season.
With the transfer window now open, speculation surrounding Lonergan’s future is likely to continue, but Waterford’s rejection of Derry City’s opening offer sends a strong message that they are reluctant to part with one of their prized assets midway through the campaign.
