Waterford’s hopes of progressing to the All-Ireland stage were dashed on Friday night after a 3-17 to 1-17 defeat to Tipperary in a high-stakes clash in Dungarvan.

Coming into the game, Waterford knew victory would secure progression and keep their championship ambitions alive heading into the knockout stages. However, defeat left their fate hanging in the balance, with other results ultimately confirming the end of their campaign.

Tipperary proved clinical in front of goal and took control with three crucial majors that helped them pull clear in the second half.

Waterford battled throughout and showed plenty of spirit, with Cian Delaney top-scoring with 1-4. Dylan Murphy added seven points, while Donncha Flannery, Dara Sullivan, Michael Moloney, Emmett Walsh, Jack O’Sullivan, and Adam Cummins also got on the scoresheet.

The Déise side lined out with M Ware in goal; L Fitzgerald, D Murphy, and D Sullivan in defence; J Walsh, A Power, and E Walsh across the half-back line; S Coffey and A Cummins at midfield; while C Delaney, J O’Sullivan, and M Moloney linked up behind a full-forward line of C Crowley, D Murphy, and D Flannery.

Waterford introduced J Mullally, R Molumphy, and F Geoghegan during the second half in an effort to swing momentum, but Tipperary finished the stronger to claim a deserved victory.

It marks a disappointing end to Waterford’s Minor championship campaign after entering the contest knowing that a win would extend their season, while defeat risked elimination depending on other results.
