Team Ireland enjoyed a successful opening session at the Four Nations Championships in Glasgow, recording six victories as competition got underway between Ireland, England, Scotland, and Wales.
The tournament marks the first time in almost two decades that all four boxing federations have competed together at the same event.
Ireland’s squad features boxers from 70 clubs across 25 counties, with 86 athletes travelling to Scotland to represent their country.
There was mixed fortune for Waterford’s representatives in the U19 semi-finals.
St Paul’s BC boxer Michael O’Reilly came up against Scotland’s Liam Moohan in the 55kg division and was defeated on a unanimous 5-0 decision.
However, Dungarvan Boxing Club’s Jake Fitzgerald, who captains the Irish team, has already secured his place in Friday’s heavyweight final. Fitzgerald will take on England’s Albie Dowell in a straight final as he bids to bring home Four Nations gold for Ireland.
Among Ireland’s winners on the opening day were Kristian Jubani, Jason Whelan, Kalib Walshe, Kayleigh Byrne, Jason Donoghue and Carly O’Herron, helping Team Ireland to six victories from the session.
Several Irish boxers have progressed directly to finals, including Grace Bailey of Castlebar BC in Mayo and Kaysie Joyce of Clonmel BC in Tipperary, while Cork’s Claire Crowley will begin her campaign on Friday.
The championships continue in Glasgow with the Elite semi-finals, before attention turns to Friday’s finals, where Fitzgerald will be among those hoping to claim Four Nations honours for Ireland.
