Waterford’s Southland Sirens Roller Derby team have secured first place in Tier 5 Women’s Central of the Five Nations Roller Derby Tournament, marking a remarkable achievement in the club’s first-ever participation in the competition.
The Sirens completed a perfect campaign with three wins from three matches, finishing top of their division and underlining the growing strength of roller derby in Waterford.
Their title-winning journey began in April when they welcomed Swansea City Roller Derby to Waterford. In front of a home crowd, the Sirens delivered an impressive performance to claim a 152-127 victory and lay the foundations for a successful tournament campaign.
The decisive final weekend took place in Manchester, where the Waterford side faced a demanding double-header. The Sirens rose to the challenge in style, first overcoming City of Hull Roller Derby by 150 points to 133 before sealing the championship with a convincing 200-162 victory over Manchester Valkyries B Team.
Those back-to-back wins ensured the Waterford outfit finished with a flawless record and secured top spot in Tier 5 Women’s Central.
The success represents a significant milestone not only for the Southland Sirens but also for roller derby in the South East. Competing against established clubs from across Britain and Ireland, the team demonstrated skill, determination, and consistency throughout the tournament.
The achievement is expected to see the Sirens move up a tier for next season’s competition, providing the team with an opportunity to test themselves against even stronger opposition.
For a club making its debut in the Five Nations Roller Derby Tournament, finishing as champions is a remarkable accomplishment and one that reflects the hard work and commitment of players, coaches, and volunteers throughout the season.
With a league title secured and promotion likely on the horizon, the future looks bright for the Southland Sirens and for roller derby in Waterford.
