Former Tipperary senior hurling star Shane McGrath believes Waterford has a “massive chance” of causing an upset against Cork this Saturday evening in Walsh Park.
Speaking ahead of the eagerly anticipated Munster SHC clash, McGrath pointed to Cork’s injury concerns as a major factor, with the Rebels expected to line out without key defenders Ciarán Joyce and Robert Downey.
“Cork are coming down without their number three and number six and they’re two big positions to fill,” McGrath said.
The former All-Ireland winner was hugely impressed with Waterford’s second-half performance against Tipperary and believes the Déise must carry that aggressive structure and direct style into this weekend’s game.
McGrath suggested Tadhg de Búrca should start at centre-back, while also calling for a direct approach towards inside forwards Stephen Bennett and Shane Walsh.
“I’d be going route one early doors and asking serious questions of Cork’s full-back line.”
He also believes Waterford thrive when they are written off.
“Waterford always seem to produce performances when their backs are against the wall.”
McGrath praised the impact made by substitutes Austin Gleeson and Kevin Mahony against Tipperary, but insisted both players should again be held in reserve due to the energy and lift they bring from the bench.
“If Austin Gleeson scores a point, it’s worth two or three to the group because of the roar it gets from the crowd.”
The Tipperary legend also highlighted the importance of Waterford starting strongly, warning that Cork may not allow them back into the contest if they repeat the sluggish opening half that nearly cost them against Tipp.
Attention also turned to referee Sean Stack, who takes charge of the game in what McGrath described as a potentially difficult environment, given the intensity and atmosphere expected in Walsh Park.
McGrath admitted he hopes officiating will not dominate the discussion after the game and called for referees to allow the game to flow where possible.
“The best referees are usually former players because they understand the game and communicate with players.”
With Waterford’s championship hopes hanging in the balance and Cork looking to strengthen their Munster position, McGrath expects a fierce battle in front of a packed Walsh Park crowd this weekend.
