Roy Keane has torn into Liverpool after their winless start to the Premier League season.

Andoni Iraola’s side has begun this campaign with two draws against Newcastle United and Nottingham Forest, in two matches where the Reds were fortunate to come away with a point.

And despite the late window signing of Bradley Barcola, Liverpool still seemingly have no out-and-out replacement for Mohamed Salah on the right wing, as well as facing the same issues defensively as they did last season under Arne Slot.

Despite all the money that has been spent in the last two summers, Liverpool are noticeably a worse team than the one that won the title in 2024-25, and speaking on Stick To Football, Roy Keane explained that they never found good replacements at full-backs.

‘I wouldn’t know where to start or finish with Liverpool’, Keane explained. ‘I look at the two full-backs for Liverpool…I’m on about the basics of the game. I’m on about heading the football, or they’re trying to win balls they can’t win.

‘They don’t even have a feel for the ball, just dinking it in behind or playing one-twos. We used to give Trent a lot of stick, but at least he could pass it, ping it, and switch play.’

He added: ‘We’re praising Arsenal, we spoke about their attack…you look at Arsenal when they lose that ball. It’s little details – everyone tucks in for each other.

‘You attack as a team, you defend as a team. Liverpool certainly aren’t doing that. Four goals in two games; they’re not good signs.

‘Is that all because of the full-backs? To be fair, probably not. But the whole team is all over the shop. You do need a bit of a helping hand [defensively]. They’re not getting a helping hand from their midfielders or anyone in front of them, or behind them, or their goalkeeper.’

And while hopes are still high for Iraola as Liverpool manager, it should be noted that it took quite a while for him to get going at Bournemouth.

After being hired in 2023, it took 10 games until Bournemouth won a game under the Spaniard, and it’s unlikely he’ll be warranted the same amount of time for a first win at Anfield.

He has a great chance to get his first win on Friday night as Liverpool travel down to Portman Road to face newly promoted Ipswich Town, who just lost 5-2 to Manchester United on Sunday.
