The Premier League returns this weekend with another packed round of fixtures, and there is no shortage of storylines as the early stages of the new campaign begin to take shape.
The action gets underway on Friday night when Ipswich Town welcome Liverpool to Portman Road for an 8pm meeting. Ipswich, back in the top flight, face another major examination after a difficult opening to the campaign, while Liverpool are looking for their first league win under new manager Andoni Iraola. The Reds have drawn their opening two matches, including a 2-2 draw with Nottingham Forest, and will be determined to turn promising performances into three points.
Saturday begins with Newcastle United hosting Bournemouth at St James’ Park at 12.30 pm. Both sides have already shown plenty of attacking intent this season, setting the stage for what could be an entertaining lunchtime encounter.
The 3 pm programme sees five games take place. Brentford welcome Sunderland, Brighton face Leeds United, Fulham host Crystal Palace, Manchester City entertain newly promoted Coventry City, while Nottingham Forest welcome Tottenham Hotspur.
There is particular interest at the Etihad, where Manchester City face Coventry following the latter’s return to the Premier League. Coventry have already shown they are capable of competing at this level, but they face one of the toughest tests English football can offer.
Tottenham, meanwhile, travel to Nottingham Forest looking for a response after a difficult opening to the season. Forest have also made an encouraging start and will see home advantage as a major factor at the City Ground.
The final game on Saturday sees Hull City host Aston Villa at 5.30 pm. Hull have made an impressive start since their promotion and will hope to maintain that momentum against a Villa side looking to establish themselves among the leading clubs once again.
Sunday brings two major fixtures, beginning with Everton against Manchester United at 2 pm. United will be looking to build momentum, while Everton will be hoping their home form can give them an opportunity to put pressure on Ruben Amorim’s side.
Then comes the weekend’s headline fixture at 4.30 pm as Arsenal host Chelsea at the Emirates.
It is a huge early-season test for both London rivals. Arsenal, the defending champions, have made a strong start and will see this as an opportunity to underline their title credentials against one of their biggest domestic rivals.
Chelsea, now under Xabi Alonso, have also started strongly and arrive with plenty of attacking threat. The Blues will be hoping to end a long wait for victory over Arsenal in this fixture, with the Gunners having dominated the recent meetings between the sides.
With ten matches across three days, there is plenty at stake even at this early stage. Newly promoted sides are looking to prove they belong, the established contenders are trying to find consistency, and Sunday’s Arsenal-Chelsea showdown could provide the clearest indication yet of where two of the league’s biggest clubs stand.
It all begins at Portman Road on Friday night before a full Saturday schedule and a heavyweight London derby bring the weekend to a close.
