Munster Rugby have strengthened their front row options ahead of the new season with the signing of experienced tighthead prop Kieran Brookes on a two-year deal, while Michael Ala’alatoa has signed a one-year contract extension.

Brookes joins the province from French Top 14 side Perpignan, bringing a wealth of experience from both the international and club game.

The 35-year-old, who was born in Stoke-on-Trent, represented Ireland at Under-20 level before going on to earn 16 caps for England, including selection in their squad for the 2015 Rugby World Cup.

During a professional career spanning more than a decade, Brookes has played for Perpignan, Toulon, Leicester Tigers, Northampton Saints and Wasps. He most recently helped Perpignan retain their Top 14 status after featuring in their promotion-relegation play-off victory over Provence.

Speaking after the move was confirmed, Brookes said he was looking forward to beginning the next chapter of his career in Limerick.

“I’m incredibly proud and excited to be joining Munster Rugby. It’s a club with a rich history and a unique identity. I’m looking forward to meeting the fans, working alongside the players and coaches, and giving everything I can to contribute to the success of the club.”

Munster have also confirmed that Michael Ala’alatoa will remain with the province for another season.

The 34-year-old Samoa international joined Munster in December and became an ever-present during the second half of the campaign, playing all 18 matches and logging close to 1,000 minutes.

Head coach Clayton McMillan welcomed both developments, describing Brookes as an invaluable addition thanks to his experience and expertise in the scrum, while praising Ala’alatoa’s durability and influence both on and off the field throughout last season.

General Manager Ian Costello added that the experienced duo will also play an important role in mentoring Munster’s emerging front-row talent, helping the province’s next generation of props develop at the highest level.

The additions provide Munster with further strength and depth in a crucial position as preparations for the 2026/27 season continue.
