Munster Rugby and Ireland international Oli Jager has announced his immediate retirement from professional rugby on medical grounds.

The tighthead prop confirmed the difficult decision today, bringing an end to a career that spanned more than a decade and included success in New Zealand, Munster honours, and international recognition with Ireland.

In a statement, Jager said it was with a “very heavy heart” that he had been advised to retire from the game.

The London-born prop began his rugby journey in Ireland before moving to New Zealand as a teenager, where he progressed through the Crusaders Academy and went on to become a key member of one of the most successful teams in Super Rugby history.

During his seven years with the Crusaders, Jager helped the province win seven consecutive Super Rugby titles and also represented the All Blacks XV.

He joined Munster in late 2023 and quickly became an important figure within the squad. His impressive form earned him an Ireland debut against Wales during the 2024 Six Nations Championship.

Across three seasons with Munster, Jager made 35 appearances, with his final game coming against Ulster at Thomond Park in April.

Munster Head Coach Clayton McMillan paid tribute to Jager, describing him as a hugely respected and popular member of the squad who made a significant contribution both on and off the field.

Everyone at Munster Rugby has wished Jager and his family the very best for the future as he begins the next chapter of his life away from professional rugby.
