Martin O’Neill is set for a return to Celtic after agreeing to become the club’s permanent manager.
The 74-year-old has reportedly accepted an initial one-year contract following discussions with major shareholder Dermot Desmond. The appointment comes after weeks of speculation surrounding the managerial position at Parkhead.
O’Neill stepped back into the role on two occasions last season and played a key part in Celtic’s successful campaign. Under his guidance, the club secured a domestic double, including a dramatic Scottish Premiership title victory on the final day of the season before adding the Scottish Cup at Hampden Park.
His expected appointment follows talks involving several potential candidates. Former Celtic striker Robbie Keane had also been linked with the position, a development that drew criticism from some supporters’ groups.
After lifting the Scottish Cup earlier this month, O’Neill suggested the club might look towards a younger candidate for the long-term future. However, Celtic’s hierarchy has opted for experience, entrusting the veteran manager with the task of building on last season’s success.
An official announcement is expected in the coming days.
