Everton have maintained their unbeaten start to the Premier League season after Ainsley Maitland-Niles struck in the sixth minute of stoppage time to snatch a dramatic 2-2 draw against Manchester United at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

It looked like United had done enough to take all three points after goals from Bryan Mbeumo and substitute Benjamin Sesko put the visitors in control.

Mbeumo opened the scoring just a minute into the second half, cutting inside after receiving the ball from Kobbie Mainoo before curling a superb effort into the far corner.

Everton responded with increasing pressure and were rewarded seven minutes from time when Tyrique George fired into the top corner to make it 1-1.

United appeared to have won it when Sesko headed Luke Shaw’s cross over the line in the 88th minute, despite Jordan Pickford getting a hand to the effort.

But Everton refused to give up.

With virtually the final kick of the game, United failed to clear their lines and Noussair Mazraoui’s attempted clearance fell to Maitland-Niles.

The Everton debutant struck first time from distance, sending a spectacular effort into the top-left corner and sparking extraordinary scenes inside Hill Dickinson Stadium.

United had chances earlier in the game, with Bruno Fernandes hitting the crossbar after meeting Mbeumo’s knockdown from Luke Shaw’s cross.

Matheus Cunha also fired over after being played in by Marcus Rashford, while Everton’s Thierno Barry headed narrowly over before the break.

The draw means Everton remain unbeaten at the start of the Premier League campaign and move up to eighth place on five points.

Manchester United sit 11th with four points, but will feel they let victory slip through their fingers after conceding in the 96th minute.

For Everton, though, Maitland-Niles’ spectacular debut goal could prove to be one of the defining moments of their early season.
