Irish sporting history is set to be made once again as tickets for Katie Taylor’s farewell fight at Croke Park go on general sale this morning.
The Bray boxing legend will bring her remarkable professional career to a close on Saturday, September 5, when she takes on unbeaten French challenger Flora Pili at the iconic Dublin venue. The fight is expected to attract more than 80,000 fans, making it one of the biggest events ever staged in Irish sport.
Demand has already been extraordinary.
Promoter Eddie Hearn revealed that more than 40,000 tickets were snapped up during pre-sale access for Matchroom Boxing members and Lidl Plus customers, with expectations growing that the event could sell out completely once tickets become available to the general public.
General sale begins at 9 am through Ticketmaster.
Taylor described the occasion as the perfect ending to her career, saying that fighting at Croke Park is “the icing on the cake” after everything she has achieved in boxing. The 39-year-old will defend her world titles while also challenging for the vacant WBC super-lightweight championship against the undefeated Pili.
The event will mark the first professional boxing contest at Croke Park since Muhammad Ali fought there in 1972, adding even more significance to what is already being billed as one of the most important nights in Irish sporting history.
